Type design books you should grab

If you’re just as passionate as I am about type, then having these is a must:

I’m no expert in type design, but as a passionate enthusiast I’ve been doing some reading that I feel compelled to share some it with you.

Then what is typography? Many of you already have a clear idea of what this is all about, since most designers have gone through a type course one way or another.
But for those of you who are not sure what the fuzz is about, here’s a brief idea to put things on perspective.

So if you really like type design, styles, rules, history and what not you may want to have a look a these books:

This is quite fun to read. It sort of an introduction to the wonderful world of type in a very friendly way, without any intimidating jargon, specially for newbies like me.

A Type Primer
A Type Primer, John Kane

Gives you a tour on how it all began and evolved into what we see today. I walks you on how things work.

Designing Type
Designing Type, Karen Cheng

This is a very thourough explanation on what is what and how it all fits together. Sort of “crack the code” kind of thing. Very handy.

The Elements of Typographic Style
The Elements of Typographic Style, Robert Bringhurst

Now this one gets really technical, but it shows you everything. To me is really a type Bible.

I’m sure there are tons of type design books out there that I still don’t know, and surely we need to put our hands on. So please share with us what else we should be looking at.
